Experience pays off in Teva Kayak n Run at Deep Water Bay

Hong Kong – Fighting hot temperatures hitting over 30 C when everyone was expecting thunderstorms and lightening that rattled Hong Kong hours before the race caused a few to dehydrate at the first race of the TEVA Kayak n Run 2012 series.

After racing 3 races in the last few weeks in different parts of Asia, Team Champion System Adventure used their experience to perfection to win the opening Teva Kayak n Run race of the summer series.

“The race sent exactly according to plan. We put the hammer down on the kayak and built a 2 minute lead. I’m lucky to have a wild animal from Chang Mai (Thailand) as my teammate as he towed me like a beast” said Ryan Blair of Champion System Adventure referring to his teammate Jay Kiangchaipai.

‘We’re really happy to win by this margin” said Kiangchaipai as their winning time was 1 hour 21 minutes 43 seconds.

Just over 8 minutes later the 2nd overall team came in with a mixed duo of Zein Williams and Pierre Le Magnan of Team Raidlight.

“That was the 1st time of done one of the Teva Kayak n Runs, and 3rd time in my adulthood being in a kayak so interesting experience as the hardest part was getting out of the kayak on the beach. Pierre basically moved the boat. Loved running in the hills as interesting doing the orienteering with no markings on the course as the recce we did last week paid off to learn the course. Doing a recce before the race is a must for everyone” said Zien Williams the teammate of Pierre Le Magnan of Team Raidlight who finished in

1 hour 29 minutes 10 seconds.

Just seconds behind them and not realizing how close they were until the last 100m in the open tunnel were the Raidlight Chiru team of Cosmo Richards and Eric Lahaie.

The kayak was fast as we struggled a bit. Started a few minutes down. Eric took off strong as usual towing me up the hill. I started to overheat a bit and had to take it easy. We reached the top of the Nicolson peak (436m) and had to make a fast decision which way down (long and easy or short and technical). We opted for the steep technical descent which worked well until we got down by the tunnel where Eric rolled his ankle. Then a few minutes later on the last downhill trail section to the beach Eric pulled a tree down on top of himself which bruised his hip. Tough guy. We basically said let’s just make it back in one piece and not kill ourselves doing this and made it back, only to see the 2nd team in front by a few seconds last 100m in the water” said Cosmo Richards of the Raidlight Chiru team who finished in 1 hour 29 minutes 42 seconds.

“Very technical, humidity is finally back in Hong Kong, overall fun race” said Eric Lahaie the other teammate of Cosmo Richards of Raidlight Chiru.

“Always good to get back in the water with these multi-disciplined races as fun and tough” said Georgie Inglis who finished with husband Kris in the 4th in the mixed teams.

Sixty teams of two started with a 4 km ocean kayak around Middle Island in Deep Water Bay before running & hiking to the top of 436m Mount Nicholson and finding 5 orienteering checkpoints in the first race of the TEVA Kayak n Run series.

Next race goes to Discovery Bay June 16.
