Hong Kong – Feb 27, 2011 –
Clement Dumont stole the show at the 1st of 5 Bonaqua Action Sprint races coming from behind passing people on the technically demanding Repulse Bay 12 course Sunday to take the lead in the series.
“It was tough as it was the first time on the course and didn’t know the sections, but loved the technical flowing aspect especially the river sections. Great to see improved new timing system at the Action Asia races” commented Dumont who took almost 3 minutes off the course record in low temperatures and dry rock conditions winning in 1 hour 10 minutes 27 seconds.
Malaysia’s Safrey Sumping one of the top runners at the Mt Kinabalu race clawed his way thru the field after trailing from a slow swim at Repulse Bay beach, mowing down the field and left it to the end to finally squeeze into 2nd overall finishing in 1 hour 14 minutes 10 seconds. “Swimming is not my strong point as I don’t swim much, but pushed hard on the run, but guess I was too far back to catch Dumont. Challenging course and love Hong Kong,” said Champion Systems Adventure team member Sumping.
Salomon Bonaqua Racing team member Jeremy Ritcey was actually 2 minutes faster than his last years winning time, but still had to settle for 3rd overall due to the speedy competition finishing in 1 hour 15 minutes 22 seconds. “I’m not in very good condition as was away from HK for a while, but still thought I was faster this year. Beautiful course as loved the really steep stuff and the technical rock sections” said Ritcey.
In the women’s battle Nadia Koucha was the overall winner in 1 hour 34 minutes. “This year the weather was dry and made me run faster, so quite happy about that as very different when raining. Looking forward to the next race” said Koucha.
Kate Pallett took 2nd in the women’s. “Nice course as much more technical than your average trail run which really makes you concentrate especially when you have other talented women around you” said Pallett finishing 2nd overall in 1 hour 41 minutes 5 seconds.
"Sea jumping was a bit of an issue for me as many jumping off the pier at the same time around me, but got thru it and had a great race. Will be back for the next one”, said Sharon “Bubbles” Loh finishing 3rd overall in 1 hour 42 minutes 57 seconds.
The 5 race series started Sunday at Repulse Bay with a 12 km trail running course including a 430 meter climb up Violet Hill’s backside on narrow technical trails, down part of the Wilson main trail stairs, then good fun with almost 2 km of river rock scrambling mixed in on the 2nd half of the course in Tai Tam Country Park.
Just a little different than your average trail race.
Almost 300 registered for the first Bonaqua Action Sprint at Repulse Bay with over 450 entered in the series so far. More information about the race can be found at www.actionasiaevents.com if you want to enter the remaining 4 as next is Mui Wo to Pui O race Mar 13, 2011. Enter early to avoid the late entry fee.
