- Family (shorter) - room for 60 teams - 8:00am (organizer will mark the family route with bright ribbons to follow so you don't get lost). Please be ready on water 745am.
- Adult (longer) race - room for 60 teams - 9:00am
- Note: This is an orienteering race where your team travels in cp order the fastest way your team decides. Team members must arrive together at each cp before proceeding and must stay together (within 50m) at all times on course.
Weather
- This race will NOT be canceled in any type of weather unless Typhoon 8 signal is hoisted at 6 am on race morning.
- A message will be put up on the website if canceled latest 6 am race morning. If Typhoon 3 signal hoisted at 6 am the race will be postponed until the signal is dropped that day or moved to the next day.
Family fun & kids event Rules
- 8:00am start of Family race (7:15am race pack pick up starts) - Family FUN & kids event (2 km kayak & 3 km run) Please be on water at 7:45am
- RACE PACK PICK UP in the morning begins 7:15am for confirmed FAMILY participants who have registered online and paid in advance.
- Minimum age 6. Any child under 11 years old must have an adult 18 years old or above with them in the kayak and both teammates should be related somehow as a family. Don't have to be family but just trying to encourage families to do more together as for FUN and not a serious race.
Family course description
- Teams will kayak around Tai Tam Bay in a loop course then must leave kayak near pier in front of Scout Centre with marshal and depart on road run to catchwater checkpoint that uses some short single track trails easy to follow for total 2 km kayak and 3 km run that all children 5 yrs and above will enjoy.
- Cut-off - Not a serious race as designed for fun without timing. OK, we will do timing but idea is to have fun and enjoy yourselves. The time limit is 50 minutes for kayak and total 1 hour 30 minutes for completing race.
Adult race rules
- 9:00am start of Adult race (8:15am race pack pick up starts) - 4 km kayak & 6 km run & 2 km kayak
- RACE PACK PICK UP on morning begins 8:15am for confirmed ADULT participants who have registered online and paid in advance.
- The Course Route - Print out map uploaded at bottom of Kayak n Run page and laminate it or put in zip lock bag. NO maps are given out race morning so don’t forget. Map holder or ziplock bag recommended to bring with you.
- Note: Come early to cheer on family event.
- We've decided to add a rule for safety concerns that you can ONLY CROSS Shek O ROAD but NOT RUN ALONG Shek O road as there is no sidewalk in many locations and very narrow with buses/mini-buses almost against the wall which means you could get killed so please stay off the road unless you are going straight across from a trail to another trail within 75m of junction. Any teams caught violating this will be disqualified, as we don't have police permission to run down cement road.
- ANY TEAMS WHO TAKE THE WRONG KAYAK WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. - We had a situation before where some team took another teams kayak and they didn't even notice that there were special water bottles with teams food/bars in the boat which was specially prepared for the teams last kayak section. This will not be tolerated and we urge you to please take the time and double check the number on the front of the kayak to make sure it matches your race number. No excuses. You will be disqualified. You will get a plastic race number at registration and must put this inside your kayak facing upwards for easy identification. The kayak bottle holder or to seat strap is the best place to put this boat number.
Adult race course description
- Adult race course description - Level of difficulty: If you are a beginner we would highly recommend some sort of upper body training (outrigging, dragon boating, fitness centre) as this is not a walk in the park and ocean kayaking can be more difficult from bad weather, large swells, currents, waves, bad navigation, etc.
- This is an orienteering race where your team travels in cp order the fastest way your team decides. Team members must arrive together at each cp before proceeding and must stay together (within 50m) at all times on course.
- Checkpoints (cps) must be done in order (cp1, cp2, cp3, cp4, cp5 and then finish).
- When going to CP1 DO NOT go close to the coastline as BIG WAVES 200 meters before arriving so stay out wide when going around the last corner. Last year 3 teams got pushed into rocks. At CP1 both team members will have to jump out, run 50m to timekeeper and return to kayaks to go to CP2. When finished all cps and going to the finish, there will be a buoy in the water that you must go around before turning towards the finish pier. This is just to extend the kayak longer but you must go around it or face a serious time penalty.
- Water at cp2 & cp5 by To Tei Wan beach by your kayaks. So please bring enough water to last you. Recommend 2-liter full hydration system.
- See photos for reference on website course page of cps.
- The course is NOT MARKED. Don't forget to bring your maps.
- Note: Course markings - Only beach and mtn checkpoints marked as teams MUST NAVIGATE themselves. Highly recommend you bring the map in a waterproof holder or ziplock bag. Compass or GPS recommended if you don't know the area.
