Family spirit alive at Hysan - Ixel & Williams again

Family Spirit Still Alive at Hysan Healthy Hike & Run

HONG KONG, 20th March 2016 - This Sunday saw over 1000 hikers and runners escape from the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy the Hysan Healthy Hike and Run with their families and friends on a day that marked the start of the spring season.  It was a proud moment for father of 12 year-old, Ngo Ching Yip, who managed to take first place in the 5km woman’s category.  Australian, Vlad Ixel, won the men’s 21km category whilst Zein Williams, from Britain, took home the women’s title.

This year, the champion of women’s 5km category was Ngo Ching Yip, who completed the course in 30 minutes and 45 seconds.  She took part in the race with her father and, although still very young, she was definitely up to the challenge.  She said that “[this] cross-country race was different from any running race we’ve run before.  My father is a cross-country trail running enthusiast and completed the 13km race today. I felt so happy taking part with him. I love doing sports with my family, but we have little chance to play together and we only run together in competitions.”

Australian runner from The North Face team, Vlad Ixel, raced to victory and a new course record in the men’s category, becoming champion once again with a record of 1 hour 44 minutes 3 seconds. He said, “the course is amazing and I really enjoy it. There was a little bushwhacking for a while, but I still managed to run the whole way”.  When asked for ideas on how people can protect the environment, Vlad stressed the importance of dietary choices, “I’m vegan and I truly believe that the best way people can help the environment is to stop eating meat”.

Just 5 minutes and 28 seconds later, Australian-born Darren Benson a previous winner on the Hysan course managed to scoop second place in the men’s 21Km category, claiming that although parts of the course were challenging, it was a really great run. “The long section through the shrubs was a bit slippery, but in general it was a really nice course. I was feeling it on the uphill at Tai Lam Chung as did a 100k bike ride with friends yesterday, but the Yuen Tuen trail section was fantastic as one the reasons I came back for this Hysan course as so nice to stetch the legs on. Just wish I had a bit more energy today but happy with second overall”,  said Benson who finished the course in 1 hour 49 minutes and 31 seconds.  Darren also has a five year old son who is already walking in his father’s footsteps (they completed their first race together two weeks ago!) and is really keen to bring him to this Hysan race next year in the 5km.

Just 3 minutes and 17 seconds later, Austrian runner Michael Skobierski crossed the finish line and took third place in the 21km men’s category, with an impressive time of 1 hour 52 minutes and 48 seconds. Skobierski had had a tough week, so found this race particularly challenging, “I just came back from Europe on Monday, so I’m still suffering from jet leg. Now I feel fine but during the race I felt really tired. The first part of the course was the most challenging as the other guys had a really fast start and I wanted to keep up with them.  The rest of the course I really enjoyed!”  Having lived and worked in Hong Kong for 3 and a half years, Skobierski heard about the Hysan race through his friends in the trail community that this had a nice course. His advice to other runners for protecting the environment was to “make sure [you] don’t throw any garbage away when you’re running in a race. Leave no trace.

HK resident UK National Zein Williams took first place in the 21km women’s category, with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 13 seconds. “It is a good race. I love this course.  It was breezy and not too windy. At points the ground was quite slippery, but the view was so beautiful and amazing. This race is great for families, especially the 5km for kids. Next year I will definitely bring my children along”.  Zein thinks that runners do a great job to protect the environment, and commented on how runners “protect the environment more because they appreciate it when they are running.”

Next to cross the finish line was local runner, Nicole Leung, whose record was 2 hours 21 minutes 37 seconds  who started trail running a year ago. She said, “I have known about Action Asia Events’ races before. Today I came to the race with my friends.  I like the course as it is easy to run, except for the uphill part. I also enjoy the beautiful scenery along the course.” When asked how to protect the environment, Miss Leung suggested not to litter and encouraged people to step on sections of the trails that do not have tree roots.

Hong Kong trail runner from the Hysan team, Flora Ching, was placed 3rd in the women’s 21km category, with a time of 2 hours 27 minutes 56 seconds. She shared her thoughts with us after completing the course, “today’s course was runnable and well organized by Action Asia. It was not too hot nor too humid, perfect for trail running. I started trail running about 3 years ago. As a beginner, 2 years ago, the first trail running race was the Hysan Healthy Hike and Run 13km, which was a short-distance race.  I tried to run 21km this year, and I am pretty surprised with my result today. I think it is due to my efforts on my regular training. I squeezed my time to do training after work.

The champion of the race in the 13km male’s category was Team Berrytime’s American Sam Fletcher, who completed the course in 59.03 minutes who has been living and working in Hong Kong 4 years. He felt pretty good about the competition, stating that, “[it] was wet and hot outside but it was still a nice day out there. I started the race with some other guys who attend the 21km category, but we split along the way. They usually run faster than me, and the last part is more difficult, so I feel happy to have won the 13km race. As for environmental protection, I think people should only take pictures and enjoy the view instead of dropping litter.” It is the first time that Fletcher has won this 13km race, and he hopes to come back next year to take on the challenge of the 21km category.

There was fierce competition in the women’s category today. Joyce Edmondson took advantage of the smooth trail course and nice temperatures to take champion place in women’s 13km category, with a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes and 36 seconds. “I feel good about today’s performance. It was really a good race. My favorite part was running to the main MacLehose trail.  When asked about encouraging her children to take part in these races, Edmondson said, “My kids also enjoy running but not quite this distance. It is a pity that they did not come today. My son is at the age when he spends a lot of time on computer. As the Hysan run is such a good race I will absolutely get them here next year.” After the Hysan event, Edmondson is going to prepare for one of the Sprint series at Sai Kung.

Local runner Long Ki Mo grabbed his third champion title in the 5km category with a fantastic time of 27 minutes and 19 seconds. “This is my third year participating in the Hysan Healthy Hike & Run. I started my trail race from Action Asia Events. I think today it is more humid than before. Luckily, the course was not slippery, so I was able to finish the race smoothly”. Apart from participating in Hysan Healthy Hike & Run to protect the environment, Mo also had some other tips for daily environment protection, “I usually recycle plastic bottles and bags. When I take part in a race, I always bring my own bottle to drink water at a water station instead of using a paper cup.”

The Hysan Healthy Hike & Run started in Tai Lam Country Park on Sunday, 20th March at 8:30am. Participants hiked along parts of the Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail, winding through peaceful bamboo forests and the route also offered both hilly and flat terrain with the 13 km going on one side of the reservoir and the 21 km going all the way around the Tai Lam Reservoir.

Through this race, participants got closer to nature and had fun with their families and friends. At the same time, Hysan Healthy Hike and Run also promoted a low-carbon lifestyle and made a contribution to environmental protection.

The event could not happen without the valuable support of Hysan Development Company Limited, Otterbox, Action X, Hoka One One, Watsons Water, Herbalgy, Salonpas, OL&N, and the Action Asia Foundation.
