Nudin and Crowther triumph at Action Asia Malaysia Trail Run
More than 700 people conquer wet and humid conditions on hilly course in Janda Baik
JANDA BAIK, PAHANG, Tuesday, November 29, 2016 – Rain made for an extra challenge at last Sunday’s Action Asia Malaysia Trail Run – already with a reputation as the country’s toughest trail race – but failed to dampen the spirits of more than 700 people who took on the hilly course set in the lush tropical rainforest of Janda Baik in the state of Pahang. Mizuno Malaysia team runner Mohamad Affindi Bin Nudin and Mont Kiara Running Club’s Sharon Crowther eventually emerged men’s and women’s champions respectively of the 18 kilometre race that flagged off at 7am at Cherengin Hills Convention & Spa Resort.
Nudin blitzed the course in 1 hour 31 minutes and 5 seconds, a comfortable win ahead of fellow Malaysian Muhammad Asdi Weding (1:38:05) and Briton Mark Williams (1:41:15).
“The route was a little bit hilly, wet and challenging, but these elements were under my control,” said Nudin, who also won the inaugural Action Asia Malaysia in 2014. “The checkpoints, course markings and the course were perfect. Action Asia did a good job with organising the event.”
The fight for the women’s title was a closer affair. Sharon Crowther, a Briton based in Kuala Lumpur, won in 1:57:03, just a minute head of another fellow countrywoman Jenny Abbott (1:58:07). Local runner Norhani Mohd Jaffar was third (2:10:31).
Crowther said: “I felt tired and a bit sore just over hills, but I really happy to win. I love the race so much because it’s an absolutely fun, beautiful and great course. It’s nice to get a bit rain as well, which made the temperature so pleasant today. I would be back next year to defend my title, but I hear it is going to be a couple kilometres longer, which means I need to get some training in again.”
Situated less than an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, the 18km route featured 767 metres of total elevation gain and 769m of total elevation loss, with the highest point of the course at 516m and the lowest at 374m. There was also an easier 10km route for beginner and novice trail runners and hikers that included 532m total elevation gain and 409m total elevation loss. Overall men’s and women’s champions of both distances were rewarded with a pair of Hoka trail running shoes.
In the 10km race, Malaysian runners occupied top three places in both the men’s and women’s categories. Muhammad Ramzan Jani Mohd bagged a comfortable overall victory in 51:46. Muhammad Halif Husin was second (54:28) and Mohd Azizi Fazlin Mohd Noh third (55:28). In the women’s race, Bee Lian Seah was champion (1:02:27) ahead of Colleen Rosana Augustin (1:05:17) and Siti Aisah Mohd Shafee (1:07:55).
While most participants were local, some travelled from afar like Jocelyn Cheung, an experienced Hong Kong runner. She was third in the 18km in the women’s 16-29 age group. “I have done several trail races and I found today’s course to have a medium difficulty level. I felt relieved when I crossed the finish line because I found the 18km quite long, though the weather was very comfortable.”
The Action Asia Malaysia Trail Run is organised by Action Asia Events and the event could not happen without the valuable support of Hoka One One, OtterBox, Compressport, World of Sports, Cherengin Hills Convention & Spa Resort, Runner, Palm Cove Centre, Action X Store, Running Malaysia, Run & Explore, and Action Asia Foundation.

Hoka One One, OtterBox, Compressport, World of Sports, Cherengin Hills Convention & Spa Resort, Runner, Palm Cove Centre, Action X Store, Running Malaysia, Run & Explore, and Action Asia Foundation的大力支持。
