Cody, for people in Asia who don’t know you, maybe give us a short intro.
I am currently sponsored by SCOTT RUNNING and living in southeast Idaho in Pocatello and studying at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho with an emphasis on geo sciences. When not studying or running, I work at Pocatello Running Company and enjoy participating in the local running community.
You have had some great results these last few year and 2nd overall this year for the 2016 U.S. Sky Running Series Final Results. Do you think this is from just logging the miles or do you have a more disciplined regime in your training to push you?
Training focus is now dedicated to trail running and more specifically for ultra-marathon running. The longer distances and races are components of running that I have always enjoyed throughout the summers and between the cross-country and track and field seasons. Now that I am finished with those, I am turning my attention completely too ultra-running.
Do you have some running goals?
Immediate short-term goals include immersing myself in the local running community and racing further abroad in higher caliber trail ultra-marathon races. The running industry is a long-term goal that I look forward to be a part of and am currently pursuing.
When did you start running?
I began running when I was pretty young and with plenty of encouragement from my family, which of course led me to cross-country and track and field for many years. From the time I was 8 years old, I have been attending the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run with my grandpa (Robert Lind), who was the head medical director and the official shotgun starter of the race.
In your Flagstaff race we heard you simulated the course and tried to train for the last big hills in mind. Do you plan to do the same for the MSIG Lantau 50 course or just stick to a regular training regime in Idaho?
Yes, I plan to study the course for MSIG and simulate the course in ways that will benefit me for the race. I plan to be ready for certain sections of the course and know what lies ahead throughout the race.
Many runners know you are very strong in the steep, technical and rocky courses and do you think this is one reason that draws you to such technical courses like the MSIG Lantau course or is it the community of runners and the people to meet that is more important to you when showing up to a race?
Growing up and training constantly in the high, steep, rocky terrain has lead to me loving these types of races and this is one reason I am very excited to be at the race in Hong Kong. Also, I love hanging out with the community and runners in these races. It's a family environment that brings everyone together and meeting new people and seeing friends is definitely a big part of it.
We heard you dislike GPS watches for training. Is it true?
I do use a Garmin for just about every run and race. I use it as a tool and more for time and stats. I really like using it for easy and recovery days becuase those are the most importnat days in my training. Sometimes I won't look at it or i will take it off completley because sometimes you just need to run and enjoy being out there without looking at it constantly.
Any expectations in Hong Kong?
One of my main goals for this year was to travel to new places and explore new trails and countries. I am really looking forward to traveling somewhere new and being able to meet new people. I am looking forward to toeing the line with some of the best in what looks to be a really neat race and enjoy the race while giving it everything.
