Taiwanese elite runner Deng Wei-fu is back again for the 2016 MSIG TAIWAN Action Asia 50 . As a runner who is fascinated by trail running as well as a man who values family a lot, Deng often takes his family with him to participate in trail races. Thus, there is always a warm scene of Deng’s family on the race course. Action Asia did a pre-race interview with the elite runner and loving father.
1. Why do you challenge the MSIG TAIWAN Action Asia 50 again? What attract you?
After participating the 1st TAIWAN Action Asia 50 trail race in 2014, I already decided to come back to the race again, but I missed the opportunity because of attending IAU 50km World Trophy Race. I’ve been hoping that I could return to the course which impressed me a lot. The course embracing Shimen Reservoir is the reason for me to participant in the race again. The altitude and mountain forest are quite attractive.
2. Have you set any goal for 2016 MSIG TAIWAN Action Asia 50? What is your impression of the race?
My memory for the race 2 years ago is a little bit vague, but I can still recall the scene through pieces of memories. I remembered the feeling when I was running on the course, carrying a flashing light. It’s amazing to overlook the Shimen Reservoir in the morning glory at dawn.
I could not practice very effectively due to my knee injury since early September, so I am not making high expectation for the second-time participation in TAIWAN MSIG Action Asia 50 or pushing myself too hard. I just want to complete the race safely, and enjoy the great international race.
3. What encouraged you to start trail running? Do you have a mentor at the first place?
I enjoyed a lot running freely in the mountain forest, where I could explore the forest and trail. I usually practice my teams - the Marathon’s World and Love Running. Of course, trail running takes a high percentage of the training. The group members practiced and took part in races together, and in the process we became closer. We learned various trail running skills and knowledge from each other, and we got progress together. I have not got professional race training since I started running, but I have learned a lot from my team members who were all good role models for me.
4. How long have you been doing trail running? Does it change anything in your life? And how do you balance daily life, work and running?
I have been doing trail running for more than 4 years. Trail running has already become part of my life, no matter in races or practices. I took my wife and daughter to take part in lots of trail running races with me, including the 2015 MSIG Singapore Action Asia 50. For me, family is always the priority, work is the second, and then the third is running. I believe that bringing the family to the sport together and going outdoors are far more important than having good results and prizes.
5. What expectation do you have on the development of Taiwan trail running?
Taiwan trail running is limited by the imperfect laws and indifference from the authorities, which brought some difficulties to the promotion. Although there are more and more running enthusiasts joining in the sport, there are still many possibilities in the development of popularization and promotion, because it includes personal safety consciousness and the support from authorities. I wish there is a good development environment of cross-country races in Taiwan after giving the most basic training and building up the safety consciousness for runners to enter the forest.
6. As an experienced runner, do you have any suggestion for those new comers in MSIG TAIWAN Action Asia 50?
For those the-first-time or experienced participants, I suggest to continuingly enhance long-distance running for 2 weeks, especially the uphill on mountain paths and trails. And then they should slowly reduce practice to avoid excessive muscle pressure and fatigue in the next 2 weeks. In addition to the importance of running equipment required in race day (including shoes, clothing, and water bag) should be well prepared in daily practice, so that equipment problems can be discovered early. All in all, I hope everyone can be relax and enjoy the scenery of Taiwan, and look forward to see you guys in Shimen Reservoir on November 12th.
