Participants full of praise for well-designed course and stunning scenery at Hysan Island Hike & Run
HONG KONG, Saturday, November 25, 2017 – The inaugural Hysan Island Hike & Run was successfully held this morning on Hong Kong Island, home of title sponsors Hysan, the territory’s leading property, investment and management company.
To promote healthy living through running and hiking, to raise funds for Action Asia Foundation’s programmes for disadvantaged children, and to celebrate seven successful years of sponsoring the Hysan Healthy Hike and Run in the New Territories, the event offered four categories for runners of all ages and abilities. Categories included 27km (teams of two), 19km, 12km and a unique 3km waterfront fun walk that many families and kids enjoyed.
Canadian runner Bryan Crane was overall champion of the 19km race in 1 hour 48 minutes and 38 seconds. “It was a fun course with a lot of good climbs and the weather was perfect today too. I always like the races organised by Action Asia Events; the marking was perfect so we couldn’t get lost. Thanks to all the volunteers too,” said Crane.
France’s Johanna El Iman grabbed the 19km female champion title in 2:30:44. “The course was amazing and technical with some flat and uphills so it was very well balanced. My last race with Action Asia Events was the Nepal Action Asia 3-day Ultra race and it was amazing too,” said Iman.
American Ryan Scott Blair and Brazil’s Guilherme Pahl Siqueira Silva of The North Face Adventure Team claimed the overall 27km title in 2:52:28. “The course was amazing. I discovered a beautiful part of Hong Kong Island that I didn’t know of before,” said Silva.
Blair, who treated the race as part of his birthday celebrations today, said: “I live on Hong Kong Island so I know all these trails very well and it was an extremely well-designed course. I have done the Action Asia Sai Kung race before and it was great to have this race in our backyard on Hong Kong Island. I enjoyed the sections that opened up to a stunning sea view the most, and I liked the team of two race as my teammate and I have joined many adventure races together and it is always more fun to run with him. It’s also quite rare to have team of two races in Hong Kong.”
Australian Pak To Lai was the fastest man in the 12km race with a blistering time of 1:11:35. A trail runner of three years, Lai said he always enjoys Action Asia Event’s races. He added: “I am happy to be the overall champion in my first attempt at the Hysan race, I have run in this area before, so I think this helped me to perform even better today. It was an enjoyable race; I am looking forward to the next one and to challenge myself again!”
Germany’s Silke Bender of The North Face team was the fastest woman in the 12km race in 1:30:47. “I had a good sprint at the end of the race and it was very fun. I enjoyed it a lot. I really liked the mixture of stairs, beautiful trails and some road at the end,” said Bender.
As for the 3km event, Hong Kong runners Tsz Chun Au-Yeung and Hoi Ning Lo won the men and women’s titles in 13:17 and 15:44 respectively.
Au-Yeung, champion of the Hysan Healthy Hike & Run 5km race earlier this year, was glad to win again. He said: “The race is great! I have participated in the Hysan series for years and I am still enjoying it, and I decided to take part especially because the course was at Deep Water Bay this year, a familiar trail to me.”
Lo, a frequent participant of Action Asia Event’s races, enjoyed the race a lot. “It was a relaxing and fun race with a well-designed course. The view was really stunning and I hope to participate in a longer distance race next year in order to enjoy more of the scenery.”
All 2017 Hysan Island Hike & Run participants received an exclusive dining coupon to reward themselves after the race.
This event is possible thanks to the generous support of Hysan. Special thanks to supporting sponsors Action X Store, Watsons Water, C3fit, Hoka One One, Royale International and Action Asia Foundation.
