Lantau’s Loasby sticks to plan taking win while Shenzhen’s Yang grabs overall Women’s – Lantau 50 by Action Asia Events
HONG KONG, Dec 1, 2024 – Local Lantau resident Hideo Harry Loasby (BuffCo) held a commanding lead over the 51km (51.9km) Men’s field with a strong first half around Nei Lek Shan, Ngong Ping, Keung Shan ridge, Shek Pik reservoir, but the fast pace and punishing 934m Lantau peak climb thrown in at the 35km mark started to take it’s toll near the Pak Kung Au to Sunset Peak section with the heat souring, thousands of silver grass hikers thrown into the mix to weave thru, losing some ground to a fast charging Frenchman Arnaud Mauduit, making his way thru the field at the halfway stage, but still held on with a convincing win taking the Lantau 50 in 6 hours 36 minutes 43 seconds.
"Tough day, started really strong, then Sunset Peak, the sun came out, the crowds and I persevered, Pak Mong (47km) had a 2nd wind, felt really strong and really happy got the win and great race, well organized, good checkpoints, better than other events, better than UTMB honestly, have to say a fantastic race, I’m so happy that was really good. Thankyou” said Loasby at the finish line celebrating his Lantau 50 win.
“My 4th time doing Lantau 50. Today was very nice weather, but it started to get really, hot and difficult on Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak. I had to drink a lot and take extra electrolytes at the checkpoint. It was nice to catch up with other runners who were giving me motivation to finish. Thanks for a great experience” said 2nd overall Mauduit, finishing the 51km course in 6 hours 44 minutes 6 seconds.
It was a little more complicated for 3rd place in the Men’s 51km as an absolute sprint down the street, into the Man Tung Road park finish with Frenchman Jeremy Pelletant edging out American Mark Iandoli by less than 1 second with official time of Pelletant at 6:53:52 and Iandoli at 6:53:53.
Clearly dehydrated and feeling it at the finish, Pelletant said, ‘Really happy to finish 3rd today. My start was really good. Held a good pace. The stairs up Lantau Peak were really hard. Really felt that. When you finish, the feeling is really good” said Pelletant who spent at least 1 minute longer than some of the other leading participants at the checkpoint fueling up to make sure he had enough in his body.
Yes I came in 4th by 1 second. Really grueling race out there. Very tough, but Lantau has a my favorite terrain, technical, complicated, the weather was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky, but the heat was something you had to deal with near the end, the checkpoints were well stocked, SIS gels they provided were great, kept my nutrition up and the competition was great, lots of friendly faces along the way, good support throughout the race,” said American Iandoli.
Hong Kong’s Li 李Chun Wing 俊穎 (The Peak Hunter) grabbed the final spot on the podium in 5th overall in 7:15:30. “I’m Marcus from TPH. Beautiful weather to start the race as great way to start early. In the middle of the race when going up to Lantau Peak (934m), it was very hot today, saw others cramping in the legs, including myself which had to fight thru, but the views were very beautiful which helped me get thru”, said 5th overall in the 51km Li.
Overall Women’s Lantau 50 winner was Shenzhen resident Yang 杨Fei Fei 非非 –( 跨过山和大海) who won in 7 hours 45 minutes.
“Sunset peak was the hardest for me as a lot people. Temperature got very hot on Sunset. Really wanted to go faster to get to next Pak Mong water checkpoint, before I ran out as only had 1 flask, as forgot my hydration pack in Shenzhen and wasn’t carrying enough fluids. Too difficult of a course for 1 flask. I saw 2 ladies when I was near cp2 around 20km so pushed hard to try getting a gap as liked the fact I could see them at that stage. Love this course. For training in Shenzhen I regularly run along the waterfront and go a couple times a month on Shenzhens tallest hill, Wu Tong mountain for training sessions” said overall winner Yang 杨.
Hong Kong resident Ainhoa Mombiela (Spain) finished 2nd overall in 8:34:08. “Just finished the full Lantau 50. Great race, amazing people, the volunteers, the food, the marshals, all fantastic, super marking, super time, very tough, I managed. Very happy. Next year, hoping, less hot temperature! Thank you, thank you Action Asia” said Mombiela.
Taking 3rd overall on the podium at Lantau 50 was UK’s Nicola Han (Nikki) from Hong Kong who finished in 8:54:32. “Just did the 51k. It was tough. The heat was crazy hot. Thought it would be cooler, but it wasn’t. Lantau and Sunset choco block with people, but it’s an awesome course so I love it. It’s one of the best courses. Marking was perfect. Love it. Marshals super helpful. Very nice. Just wished I could have pushed a little harder, but it was just too hot.” said 4th overall Han.
American Jennifer 跃强 Chen 陳 came home 4th in the Womens 51k in a time of 9:08:48.
“The hardest part of this race was Lantau peak. Not a lot of shade. Very big steep steps. Very tight quads right now! Great race. Fantastic organization. Beautiful weather. Couldn’t have asked for a better day.” Said Chen clearly happy with her result.
In the Women’s 51km, finishing 5th overall in 9:32:10 was Hong Kong’s Ng 吳Wing Chi, Gigi 穎芝 “Today was so hot as temperature was so hot. After Shek Pik climbing up Lantau peak, it became very hot. Just said to myself no. I need to slow down, just wanted to finish, drank more water, had lots of gels from checkpoint that helped me to get thru that rough patch. My toes were very sore on the downhill to Pak Mong trying to go so fast at 47km mark. But I did it” said Ng who said she trains 3-5 days a week between sessions along the TST Kowloon waterfront going to the gym for strength and conditioning workouts.
“Awesome hearing everyone’s war stories to get them thru the Lantau 50 journey regardless of distance as always an unforgettable experience, a true challenging journey for many on such a demanding technical terrain. Hopefully the stunning views along the ridgelines will make all the participants recommend more overseas participants to come visit Hong Kong” said Michael Maddess, Director of Action Asia Events.
The Lantau 50 provides three distance categories including 16km, 27km Skyrace and 51km Ultra Skymarathon. The 51km course (formally 54km but due to landslide and closed mountain section will be shortened to 51km) started at 6:30am from Man Tung Road Park in Tung Chung, Lantau Island, taking runners up to Nei Lek Shan, Ngong Ping, Keung Shan ridge, Shek Pik, Lantau Peak - height 934m, Sunset Peak - height 800m, Pak Mong finishing in Tung Chung challenging even the most experienced runners with over 3,000m of elevation gain, 3,000m of elevation loss with a 12-hour cut-off.
