Frenchman Planchat and Taiwanese Hsu push to take honors at Shihmen
Taiwan Action Asia 50
Nov 17 2024 – Taipei – Shihmen Reservoir Taoyaun County - Three typhoons in a month, hundreds of fallen trees, numerous landslides, overgrown plantations, extra mud were some of the challenges in the preparation leading up to arguably one of Asia’s toughest, technical 50 km Skyrunning events that Action Asia Event organizers had to deal with.
Non-stop in the final 2 weeks every day the amount of work was huge as organizers managed to clean the trails with a couple minor hilly detours, adding to the already 3100m elevation gain course that felt more like 5000m+ with the nonstop use of ropes, technical rocks that makes a Hong Kong course look lame in comparison. And organizers added some extra distance to push the course over 50km for a little extra punishment.
Race morning, dark, headlamps shining, fog in the mountain sections, the glowing fluorescent yellow ribbons and signs guided the 50km participants up Shihmen Shan for the first 10km loop around Shihmen Reservoir, Saturday November 16th with Frenchman Bastien Planchat grabbing the overall lead at the 40km mark to stay in front, but not without a battle for the top with Taiwan’s Chen Qirui and Macau’s Weng Wa only 1 minute behind on the grueling course giving everything to close the gap.
In the Women’s local Taiwanese Hsu Pei Chi had a comfortable lead to take honors in the overall 50km Women’s race while 2nd place Catherine Bojos from the Philippines put on a tremendous show to show how strong she was while Japan’s Jinko Richards from Hong Kong was 3 minutes behind Bojos taking 3rd overall in the Women’s 50km.
“It was really nice starting in the dark, the feeling on the trails with headlamps, with the beginning having a fog on the reservoir coming down the mountain at first light, trails in the dark jungle, really tough, technical, really warm, but nice and atmosphere was great, together with great marking, will want to come back to Taiwan again for this,” said overall winner Planchat who finished in 7 hours 40 minutes 41 seconds on the new course.
“Finishing in over 9 hours, that was hard. Really slippery, so much climbing, but a lot of fun with the ropes. Not much wind so temperature was quite hot in the jungle sections which also made it so slippery and wet on the technical rocks. I just kept super focused and stayed in my flow as was so nice not thinking about anything in that state of mind. Loved it,” said overall winner Hsu 許 Pei Chi 珮琪 (Team 靠北越野) from Taiwan finishing the Taiwan Action Asia 50 in 9 hours 17 minutes 52 seconds.
Just over 1 minute behind and giving it everything was Chen 陳Qirui 其睿. “The course was much demanding then I thought, definitely more technical also, so really caught me by surprise. Due to the weather overcast, I was hoping to see some views, but as fog boxed in so early in the morning, the mountains at low altitude, weather made it more slippery, but more fun this way as my style which I loved” said Taiwanese Chen 陳Qirui 其睿 (Team 靠北越野) from Taichung area finishing in 2nd overall in the Men’s 50km field in 7 hours 42 minutes 9 seconds.
Macau national Leong 梁 Weng Wa 泳華 gave it extra power at the end chasing Chen, but was so close finishing 3rd overall 8 seconds behind in 7 hours 42 minutes 17 seconds. “Awesome course, but incredibly technical with nonstop climbing. After the typhoon, fallen trees, made trail harder. The weather was overcast as didn’t see the sunrise, but as a lot of fog in the forest, the course was amazing.as an incredible feeling seeing the fog and mist in the jungle area at first daylight after wearing headlamps as being so technical, I can’t think of any other country in Asia that has something like this as great that it is here in Shihmen reservoir area. Just beautiful.” said Leong who grabbed 3rd in the Men’s 50km at Taiwan Action Asia 50.
Grabbing 2nd in the Women’s 50km was Catherine Bojos. “I’m from the Philippines and proud to get 2nd. “From the start I liked running in the dark as so refreshing, loved the fact there were so many hills as comparing the numerous uphill & downhill sections, the uphill’s were really hard for me as loved the technical slippery downhills” said 2nd overall in the Women’s, Bojos finishing in a time of 9 hours 56 minutes.
Japanese (Hong Kong resident) Jinko Richards took 3rd place just over 3 minutes behind Bojos. “The course was quite interesting variation, very steep uphill’s, downhills, mud, gravel, ropes, dirt and everything as different and interesting at the same time as nice to try this” said Jinko Richards surprised too see so much in the 50km course finishing in 9 hours 59 minutes 27 seconds.
