Season Opener – CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks: Showcasing Hong Kong’s Natural Beauty

Season Opener – CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks: Showcasing Hong Kong’s Natural Beauty

HONG KONG Oct 2, 2024 – Since 2009, the Hong Kong trail running season has officially commenced after the long, hot summer with one of the most challenging and exhilarating events on the calendar: the CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks. Organized by Action Asia Events, this year’s race will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2024.

The thrilling Lantau event invites participants to conquer both Lantau Peak (934m) and Sunset Peak (800m+), covering nearly 1900m of total elevation gain over a grueling 23.9km (24km) course. A shorter 15km option with 854m of elevation gain is also available, providing outdoor enthusiasts and athletes with a unique and unforgettable experience.

The CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks is renowned for its tough, technical terrain and is strategically scheduled for early October when temperatures begin to cool, dropping to around 30°C from the summer highs of 33-35°C. While still warm, the conditions challenge competitors to stay hydrated and prepare for the race’s demands. The event serves as a benchmark for participants to evaluate their summer training and set goals for the upcoming new trail season.

Among the anticipated Women competitors is Eszter Csillag who attempted a double ultra over the summertime (2 different 100-mile (170km+) trail races in 1 summer in USA & France) with little rest time between and Flora Ching who just came back from the Skyrunning World Championship after a summer of training.

“It has been a few years that I really wanted to run this iconic race in Hong Kong. It’s kind of a must. If you live here, you need to do it. Finally, I’m doing it and looking forward to this incredibly challenging and beautiful course” said Csillag.

"Lantau 2 Peaks is definitely a must-do trail race in the season. Crazy elevation in such short distance challenging your uphill ability and technical descent skills! Step outside of the comfort zone and give it all you got! See you on Oct 6!” Said Ching.

KC Chan an “all-rounder’ local Hong Kong trail runner has had great results winning 50km trail races to surging when needed in shorter technical events and will be one of the favorites after a summer of also heading to UTMB and the Skyrunning World championship recently representing Hong Kong.

“Compared to the mountain trails in Europe over the summer, it’s always a shock to the system hiking up the stairs in Hong Kong with high temperatures and very different technique on stones compared to windy dirt trails. Lantau Peak is challenging, hard on the body and really has a lot of competition from so many experienced trail runners in Hong Kong. I’m always ready for a good fight and appreciate CBRE making the Lantau 2 Peaks season opener possible as great for the community!” said Chan who will be pushing hard in the men’s 24km solo category.

“Lantau 2 Peaks is a great event to start the trail running season. It’s a tough one so breaks you in quickly. Thanks to CBRE for supporting this longstanding event” said James Parsons who has been a regular since the first edition.

Action Asia Events remains dedicated to hosting high-quality sports events, and the CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks exemplifies this commitment.

“For the fourth consecutive year, CBRE Hong Kong is proud to once again be the title sponsor of the Lantau 2 Peaks Race. As one of the most anticipated outdoor events for us, it reflects our commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among our colleagues and the wider community. We are also very excited to partner with Action Asia Events, who share our unwavering commitment to supporting the sports community and sustainable practices.” said Mr. Tom Gaffney, President, North Asia, Advisory Services, CBRE.

Race Director & Course Designer Michael Maddess emphasized the importance of community in the event. "The CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks season opener is always one of my favorites as brings the whole trail running community together after everyone doing their own thing over Hong Kong’s hot summer, with many laughing at who stepped up in their training and who didn’t put in the time, but laying a benchmark on what work needs to be focused on to get back on track for a good season ahead," Maddess remarked.

As autumn ushers in ideal running conditions, the CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks is the perfect way to kick off the trail running season. Action Asia Events invites participants to enjoy a memorable outdoor adventure, pushing their limits against the stunning backdrop of Hong Kong’s natural landscapes, Lantau Peak, Sunset Peak and celebrating a return to normalcy following the pandemic.

The Lantau 2 Peaks would not be possible without the generous support of presenting sponsor CBRE. Special thanks to all supporting partners, including Royale International, Action X Store, Watsons Water, Fitz, Cathay Pacific, St Johns, BIX recovery, New Life Plastics, Cosman Health Group, Action Asia Sports Academy, and Ocean Recovery Alliance. Lastly, heartfelt gratitude to all staff, marshals, and volunteers who contribute their time and energy to make this event a success.
